PREFACE.

IN submitting to the public a Sixth Edition of this work, the Editor thinks it scarcely necessary to do more than advert to the large number of copies heretofore in request, and still demanded by the students and amateurs of Architecture of every class. That alone shows in what esteem the work has been held; and from its great utility in smoothing the path of the junior members of the profession at their entrance upon it, no doubt can exist that such will continue to be the

case.

It will be seen that in this edition the text has throughout received many careful corrections, and has moreover been brought within the compass of a single volume, by which a more easy reference to the different subjects has been obtained than existed when it was in three volumes. The Plates have been carefully compared with the letter-press, and have been revised and amended in a considerable number of places, which seem to have escaped the author's attention. One plate also has been supplied, which, though described in the text, does not appear to have been engraved for any of the previous editions.

It is needless here to enumerate the several parts of the body of information contained in the following sheets, an ample account of these being given in the Table of Contents,
