Wilkinson with the tradition handed down from master to master that it was "the ancient cock-fighting bell of this School." They are said to be rare.

No old deeds or writings concerning Pocklington School are extant, and no one knows what has become of them.

Nor of the early masters do we know much, save that they sent many bright boys to St. John's College, Cambridge.7
