PREFACE. I HAVE been asked to furnish a recommendatory Preface to this book. My immediate impression on reading it was that it needed no such notice from me, and that it was only the modesty of the author that dictated the request. It is well able to speak for itself, and will, I am convinced, be read by others, as it was by me, with unflagging interest to the end. It is throughout a truthful and graceful picture of a true Christian hero, and everywhere the portrait exhibits those touches which indicate the sound spiritual judgment of the author, and give to the pages of the book a deep and living interest.
