PREFATORY NOTE.

ALL the volumes of TERRINGTON REGISTERS have been neatly rebound in half-leather and cloth, and in modern times have been well cared for, but the early ones have suffered much from damp at some period, and it has been difficult to decipher many of the entries.

Vol. I is 13 in. by 7 in. in size, and contains thirty-five parchment leaves. It is printed here as it stands, omitting only the constantly recurring "was baptised" in the Christenings, and the extraordinary arrangement of its contents will at once be noticed. Possibly the order of the pages was left to the binder when the volume was rebound, but that alone is hardly sufficient to account for the hopeless confusion. For convenience I have numbered the pages, and anyone desiring to follow the entries in chronological order will find they run as follows:

CHRISTENINGS: Pages 5, 5a, 10, 10a, 12, 12a, 13, 13a, 14, 14a,

21, 21a, 1a, 2, 2a, 3, 3a, 6, 7, 7a, 8, 4, 4a, 22, 22a, 23, 23a, 24, 25, 26a, 30a, 31a, 27, 27a, 28, 19, 1, 32, 34, 33a, 29, 29a, 35, 35a.

MARRIAGES: Pages 8a, 4, 19a, 12, 18, 18a, 2a, 6, 6a, 8, 22, 223, 23, 25, 26, 30, 31, 31a, 27, 30a, 34, 34a, 33a.

BURIALS: Pages 16a, 15, 15a, 17, 17a, 20, 20a, 2a, 3, 7, 4a, 22a, 23, 23a, 25, 26, 30, 31, 28a, 27, 27a, 18, 24, 32a, 33, 34a, 29a, 29, 35a.

Marriages and Burials appear to be missing between the years 1618 and 1623.

Vol. II consists of thirty-five parchment leaves, and is 61⁄2 in. by IO in. in size. Bound in with the volume is a print, headed by the Arms of the Commonwealth, of the Act of Parliament touching marriages, of the 24th August, 1653.

Vol. III is 14 in. by 7 in. in size, and contains forty-five parchment leaves, numbered on each side pages 1-90. Owing to the use of poor ink, and probable exposure for a long period to damp, the writing is in many places almost illegible, and I have been

compelled to indicate by dots many names and words which I have been unable to decipher. The arrangement of the entries in this

volume is almost as curious as that of Vol. I. The first six leaves are filled with particulars of the Collections on Briefs made between 1697 and 1728, and many of these entries are illegible, and others partly so. In the latter case I have supplied several names from lists of Briefs in other parishes. The contents of the volume may be summarised as follows:

28-36. Baptisms, Weddings, and Burials, 1722—1731.

[merged small][merged small][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

The volume is lettered on the cover as if all the Baptisms, Marriages, and Burials between 1681 and 1768 were included, but from the above Table of Contents it will be noticed that there are no Marriages later than 1753.

Vol. IV, 12 in. by 8 in. in size, contains thirty-two parchment leaves, which I have paged from 1 to 64. Pages 39, 40, 63, and 64 are blank.

Vol. V contains a Terrier dated 1760 and the Marriages and Banns from 1754 to 1812.

The village of Terrington is eight miles west from Malton; the parish contains the townships of Terrington, Wigginthorpe and Ganthorpe.

The thanks of the Society are due to the Rev. SAMUEL WIMBUSH, M.A., the Rector of Terrington, for kind permission to transcribe these Registers.
