TH

PREFACE.

HIS volume is the eighth one containing miscellaneous articles issued by the Society, which it is hoped will sustain the reputation for interest and research attained by the previous

volumes.

Family history is again represented by an article by the late Mr. W. T. Lancaster, F.S.A., on the families of Tilly, Metham, Leeds, Pigott, Batt, and Fearnley, who were connected with Oakwell Hall and the manors of Birstall and other places. The families of Talvas and Copley of Copley are exhaustively treated by Mr. W. Paley Baildon, F.S.A., by the aid of notes from his large collections, and will be continued by an article on the Copleys of Batley. The families of Shilleto of the West Riding, Ellis of Kiddal, and Denison of Leeds are also the subject of other articles. Mr. C. T. Clay, F.S.A., gives the result of much research in his paper on the family of Woodlesford.

J. W. M. Turner, R.A., and his wanderings in Yorkshire are ably described by Mr. H. E. Wroot, who has made a special study of the subject for many years.

Much genealogical information may be obtained from the monumental inscriptions in the Leeds Parish Churchyard and the fifteenth century rental and early wills of Pontefract.

Mr. G. E. Kirk has a painstaking and interesting article on Lotherton Chapel and an old Shop in Briggate receives historical treatment. Miss Hargrave supplies a lively description of a Leeds Malefactor and of Letters written by Thoresby. Mr. W. Barwell Turner, who is well versed in Heraldry, has a critical article on the recent Grant of Arms to the city of Leeds.

Valuable records are represented by "the Manor of Kirkgate cum Holbeck," "Extracts from the Leeds Mercury, 1737-1742," and several shorter contributions of much interest.

The Rev. Matson Vincent has kindly undertaken the laborious work of preparing the Indices of Persons and Places, and the best thanks of the Society are due to him and to the writers of the different articles.
