PREFACE.

NOTWITHSTANDING the great importance and practical utility of Surveying and Civil Engineering, we are in want of a popular and concise work upon the subject. The necessary information can only be obtained from different works. With respect to the contents of this, the merits must be shared among many able writers; although there are many original ideas to be found through the work.

I have endeavored, as much as possible, to select from the various sources of information within my reach, what seems to me most worthy. I have transcribed from the second edition of an Elementary Treatise on Surveying, written by myself, and published in Ireland, what seems to be most acceptable to the intelligent student. As far as my information extends, there is, I believe, no work of a general character, which contains all that is necessary on Surveying and Civil Engineering, which is the best apology I can offer for ushering this little work before the public.
