Among the most venerable and interesting remains in this country are the Versions and Glosses of the Holy Gospels, the immediate publication of which is now proposed, in the following manner :

I. .The Pure Saxon Text, from a Cambridge MS. with complete collations: from a MS. in the Bodleian Library; in the Semi-Saxon of the Twelfth Century, from the Hatton MS. in the Bodleian Library, a Cambridge MS., a MS. in the King's Library. The text of the Hatton MS. will occupy a separate column.

II. The Vulgate, accompanied by the Interlineary Glosses of the Eighth Century, from the celebrated MSS. in the Cottonian and Bodleian Libraries, known as the Durham, or St. Cuthbert's, and the Rushworth, MSS.

Of the pure Saxon Text, two editions have been printed the first at London in 1571, under the auspices of Archbishop Parker, with a Prefatory Adress to Queen Elizabeth, by Foxe the Martyrologist; the second by Marshall and Junius, at Dordrecht in 1665, superior in some respects to the preceding, yet exhibiting in many instances a text made up from manuscripts of heterogeneous character.

Of the Semi-Saxon Text no specimen has yet been printed.

Of the St. Cuthbert's and Rushworthian Glosses, little beyond the fact of their existence is known to the majority of Saxon students; though the dialect in which they are written, being that of the kingdom of Northumbria, as well as their high antiquity, renders them of the utmost importance to English philologists and divines.

The First Part, price Fifteen Shillings, containing the Gospel of St. Matthew, will be sent to press as a

sufficient number of names shall have been collected.

Cet appendix, dont l'éditeur est M. Benjamin Thorpe, n'a pas encore été publié, non plus que le rapport dont il dépend; mais trois ou quatre exemplaires ont été donnés c'est sur l'un d'eux que M. At the end of the volume, four plates of fac-similes of manuscripts with interlineary Anglo-Saxon Glosses.

All the Glossaries are printed, like the poetry, in double column.

In all, it contains ten plates of fac-similes.

L'on connaît deux exemplaires de cette brochure : l'un est conservé au Musée Britannique parmi les King's Pamphlets, l'autre se trouve dans le cabinet de M. Benjamin Thorpe.
