The President presented a communication containing proposals for printing, from Messrs. Hammond and Main, which, on motion, the reading being dispensed with, was referred to the committee on printing.

On motion of Mr. Acock,

Resolved, That the Secretary of State be requested to communicate to the Senate, an abstract of the census of this State for the year 1844, at his earliest

convenience.

On motion of Mr. Miller,

Resolved by the Senate, That the committee on the militia be instructed to inquire into the expediency of erecting a suitable building for the safe keeping and preservation of the State arms, and that they report by bill or otherwise.

Mr. Jones gave notice that on Wednesday next or some day thereafter, he would introduce a bill to amend the 8th article, of an act concerning appeals from justices of the peace and proceedings thereon in the circuit court, approved March 21st, 1835.

The following bills were severally read a second time, referred to a committee of the whole, and ordered to be printed:

An act respecting salvage.

An act to establish recorder's offices.

An act regulating the office of sheriff and marshall.

An act to repeal an act to provide for the sale of land for taxes, approved Feb. 27, 1843.

Was read a first time,

Mr. Monroe moved to reject the bill,

Which was determined in the negative by the following vote:

Yeas-Messrs. Fort, Harper, Monroe, Powers, Reese, Shelton and Wolfskill

On motion of Mr. Lucas, the rule was suspended and the bill was read a second time.

Mr. Acock moved to refer the bill to the committee on the judiciary with instructions to report a bill to enforce the collection and payment of the revenue for the year 1844, and all preceding years under the act proposed to be repealed. Which was determined in the negative by the following vote:

Yeas.-Messrs. Acock, Fort, Hancock, Johnson Monroe, Polk, Powers, Reese, Shelton, Snyder, Thompson, Welborn and Wolfskill-13.

The House has so amended the concurrent resolution of the Senate, relating to the joint action of the committee of the two Houses on printing, as to authorize the standing committee of the House on printing to act jointly with the select committee of the Senate on job printing.

The Senate met pursuant to adjournment.

A bill for the relief of William J. Smith and others,

Which on motion of Mr. Wolfskill, the rule being suspended, was read a second time and refered to the committee on claims.

Mr. Snyder gave notice that he would on to-morrow or some subsequent day, ask leave to introduce a bill to provide for opening a State road from the city of Cape Girardeau in Cape Girardeau county, passing through the town of Jackson, in said county, and through Fredericktown in Madison county, to Springfield in Greene county.

On motion of Mr. Detchemendy,

Resolved, That the committee on internal improvements, be requested to inquire into the expediency of changing or altering the act entitled, an act to provide for opening and repairing public roads and highways, so as to operate by equal taxation, to be assessed and collected according to the present mode of collecting the State and county revenue.

Mr. Miller, on leave of the Senate,

Presented the petition of Mr. Thomas, with accompanying documents, in relation to a certain claim against the State.

Which, on motion, the reading being dispensed with, were referred to the committee on claims.

On motion of Mr. Snyder,

The amendment of the House of Representatives to the resolution of the Senate, in relation to the joint action of the committees of the two Houses on the subject of printing was taken up and concurred in.

Mr. Monroe moved that the bill be passed over for the present, which was negatived by the following vote:

Nays-Messrs. Acock, Anderson, Boggs, Calhoun, Detchemendy, Ellis, Gentry, Harris, Hudspeth, Jones, Lucas, Massey, Miller, Mills, Netherton, O'Bryan, Rawlins and Snell-18.

Mr. Acock moved to amend the bill by way of ryder as follows:

Strike out the proviso up to and including the word "passed" in the 7th line and insert the following:

Provided, That nothing in this act shall be so construed as to release any collector from coilecting and paying into the treasury all the revenue which may be due, or shall have been collected for the year 1844, or any preceding years. Which was read a first time.

Mr. Lucas moved to reject the ryder.

Which was negatived by the following vote:

Yeas.-Messrs. Anderson, Boggs, Calhoun, Detchemendy, Ellis, Gentry, Harper, Harris, Jones, Lucas, Mills, Netherton, O'Bryan and Snell-14.

Nays.-Messrs. Acock, Fort, Hancock, Hudspeth, Johnson, Massey, Miller, Monroe, Polk, Powers, Rawlins, Reese, Shelton, Snyder, Thompson, Welborn and Wolfskill—17.

When on motion the ryder was read a second time.

Mr. Reese moved to amend the amendment as follows:

Strike out all after the word "provided" and insert "however, that this act shall not operate so as to exempt any person from paying, or any collector of this State from collecting and paying over any taxes now due, for the year 1844, or any year prior thereto, in the same manner and with like effect, as if this act had not passed.

All acts and parts of acts repealed by the act entitled an act to provide for the sale of lands for the taxes, approved Feb. 27, 1843, are hereby revived and put in full force."

Which was rejected.

Mr. Monroe moved to amend the amendment as follows:

By adding to the ryder the following:

Provided also, that nothing herein contained shall be so construed as to prevent the payment of taxes, at the treasury, on lands reported as non-resident, in the same manner as though this act had not passed.

Which was read and adopted.

The question was then taken whether the ryder should be ordered to a third reading, and determined in the affirmative, when

The ryder was read a third time.

The question then recurred on the passage of the bill as amended, and was determined in the affirative by the following vote:
