To the Public, Dramatis Personæ (2 pp.). Scene, near Toulon. This anonymous work is quite a fair piece, it was never acted. The plot is founded on fact, and the language, if not poetical, is correct and animated. It was written when the author was eighteen, and is from this fact a remarkable production. Unknown to Genest.

'The Royal Slave was performed before the King and Queen by the students of Christ Church on August 30, 1636. Henry Lawes wrote the music to the songs, and among the actors was Richard Busby, who " approv'd himself a second Roscius." The play was mounted at considerable cost (the actors appearing in Persian costumes), and gave such satisfaction that the Court "unanimously acknowledg'd that it did exceed all things of that nature which they had ever seen." The Queen was so charmed with "The Royal Slave" that in the following November the King's company was ordered to represent it at Hampton Court; but the performance of the professional players was judged far inferior to that of the amateurs.

There is nothing improbable in the plot; the scene lies in Castile, yet the Powder Plot and Lilly the Astrologer are mentioned.

Prologue and Epilogue (2 pp.). The scenes are laid in the head quarters of King Richard and the Earl of Richmond, when they are in sight of one another.

This tragedy was excellently acted in every part, particularly by Betterton in King Richard, Harris in the Earl of Richmond, Smith in Sir William Stanley; they gained additional estimation to themselves as well as profit to the whole company. Downes does not tell us who acted the other characters.

The greater part, however, consists of fictitious love scenes. It is interesting in as much as nothing is taken from Shakespeare.

This on the whole is a very good play. It was acted in the season of 1669-1670, though not printed till 1671. It was performed for twelve days in succession, a good run for the times. The part which concerns Sir Salomon is professedly taken from Moliere's School for Wives; there is an important underplot. Sir Salomon is a part quite out of Betterton's line, but he acted it splendidly, a proof of his versatility.
