Conversazione.-A Conversazione was held in the City Art Gallery, Manchester, on November 27th, when Mr. Alfred Darbyshire, F.S.A., F.R.I.B.A., gave a lecture on “Ordsall Hall, Past and Present," which was illustrated by an excellent collection of paintings, engravings, and photographs. The Lord Mayor (Alderman J. F. Roberts) presided on the occasion, and previous to the lecture he and the Lady Mayoress held a reception. There was a large attendance of members and friends.

After the lecture a musical and literary entertainment was given under the direction of Mr. John Wilcock, at which Miss Lilian Roberts and Mr. Fred Morgan, Mrs. Wilcock, Miss Balshaw, and Mr. Herbert Yates kindly gave their services.

CONFERENCE OF ARCHEOLOGICAL SOCIETIES was held in London on July 8th, 1896. This Society was represented by Mr. Alexander Brooke and Mr. C. C. Smith, whose report is herewith appended.

ARCHEOLOGICAL SURVEY OF LANCASHIRE.-After a long but unavoidable delay this work, which has been compiled by Mr. William Harrison, under the auspices of this Society, has been issued. Its value has been recognised by the press, and it is hoped the work will be appreciated by the members. As only a limited number of the survey has been printed members would do well to secure copies before it gets out of print.

OBITUARY.-We have lost two members by death during the year, namely:

Rev. Joseph Nelsey Pocklington, M.A., rector of St. Michael's Church, Hulme, Manchester, who died at the age of seventy-six, on 15th January, 1896. He was one of the original members of the Society, and had always taken the deepest interest in its proceedings. He was a native of Boston, Lincolnshire, and at the time of his death was one of the senior clergymen in Manchester, having been ordained in 1848 by Bishop Prince Lee.

Mr. Thomas Henry Bagshaw died on 3rd June, 1896, aged fifty-nine years. He was for many years clerk to the Salford

Board of Guardians.

APPENDIX TO REPORT.

ARCHEOLOGICAL CONGRESS.

REPORT BY MR. ALEXANDER BROOKE.

The eighth Congress of Archæological Societies, in union with the Society of Antiquaries, was held at Burlington House, on Wednesday, July 8th, 1896, under the presidency of Sir John Evans, K.C.B., F.S.A., F.R.S.

The Photographic Survey was announced as being taken up, and no doubt was entertained of its making more satisfactory progress when known, though much depends in every district on the hands into which it falls. The report of the sub-committee had been issued to all societies in union. Chancellor Ferguson, of Carlisle, described the difficulties in getting local societies to work on a systematic scale. He found he could get plenty to photograph anything of interest actually asked for.

A Sussex archæologist said his society was working for the survey systematically, and very anxious to secure photographs of everything of archæological interest in the country their society covered; but whole-plate size was recommendedmany of their members had only half-plate and quarter-plate, and he asked whether he should be allowed to accept the smaller sizes.

Mr. Ralph Nevill said it was decidedly desirable to obtain as complete a photographic survey as possible as soon as possible, and in any way possible; if whole plates were not obtainable it was well to be content with an instalment of half or quarter plates. Then they should be mounted on whole-plate size; it was most desirable to have them of a uniform mount.
