LVI. And when the two Men, which had left Abraham and Jehovah converfing together, came to Sodom, it is faid, [4] And there came two ANGELS to Sodom at Even. And when the Morning arofe, then the ANGELS haftened Lot. And be faid, that is, one of the Angels faid, Escape for thy Life; for I cannot do any thing till thou be come thither. And the Sun was risen upon the Earth, when Lot entered into Zoar. Then JEHOVAH rained upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah Brimstone and Fire from JEHOVAH out of Heaven. Whence it is plain, that one of these two Angels is here alfo dignified with the Appellation of Jehovah, and yet is reprefented as acting under the Influence of another Jehovah in Heaven. So that it is manifeft, here are two diftinct Perfons, or Angels, which appeared upon Earth, to each of which is given the Appellation of Jehovah.

LVII. Again, when Jacob lived with his Father Laban, and was giving an Account to his Wives of their Father's Conduct and

Behaviour towards him, he fays, [5] And the Angel of God fpake to me in a Dream, Jaying, Jacob; and I faid, Here am I; and be faid, I am the God of Bethel, where thou anointedft the Pillar, and vowed a Vow unto me. Now the Vow which Jacob made at Bethel was this: [6] If God be with me, and will keep me in this Way, that I go, and will give me Bread to eat, and Raiment to put on; fo that I come again to my Father's Houfe in Peace: Then fhall JEHOVAH be my God. Whence it is plain, that an Angel of God, fpeaking to Jacob, calls himfelf [7] Jehovah the God of Bethel.

LVIII. Thus alfo we find it faid, that [8] the ANGEL OF JEHOVAH appeared unto Mofes, in a Flame of Fire out of the Bujh. And Mofes faid, I will now turn afide, and fee this great Sight, why the Bush is not burnt. And when JEHOVAH faw that he had turned afide to fee, God called unto him out of the Midft of the Bush. Moreover, he faid, I am the God of thy Fathers, the

God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob. And Mofes hid his Face; for he was afraid to look upon God. Where it is manifeft, that an Angel is called by Mojes, Jehovah; and that the Angel calls himself, the God of Abraham, the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob,

TIX. Thus alfo, when the Children of Ifrael were marching towards the Red-Sea, it is faid, that [9] the ANGEL of God, which went before the Camp of Ifrael, removed and went behind them, and the Pillar of the Cloud went from before their Face, and flood behind them. And yet, in another Place, it is faid, that [1] JEHOVAH went before them by Day in a Pillar of a Cloud, to lead them the Way; and by Night in a Pillar of Fire, to give them Light.

LX. It is also faid, when Mofes went up to Mount Sinai, that [2] JEHOVAH called unto him out of the Mountain. And again, that Mofes came and called for the Elders of the People, and laid before their Faces all thefe Words which JEHOVAH commanded him.

And that Mofes returned all the Words of the People of Ifrael unto JEHOVAH: That JEHOVAH faid again unto Mofes, Go unto the People, and fanctify them To-day and Tomorrow, and be ready against the third Day: For the third Day JEHOVAH will come down, in the Sight of all the People, upon Mount Sinai. And the third Day Mount Sinai was altogether on a Smoke, becaufe JEHOVAH defcended upon it in Fire.

And JEHOVAH came down upon Mount Sinai. And JEHOVAH called up Mofes unto the Top of the Mount. And God spake all thefe Words, faying, I am JEHOVAH thy God, which brought thee out of the Land of Egypt, &c. And yet St. Stephen, who was a few, affirms, that [3] the Law was given by the Difpofition of ANGELS: And that it was an ANGEL that pake to Moses from Mount Sinai, and with our Fathers, who received the lively Oracles to give unto us. And St. Paul fays, [4] that the Law was ordained of ANGELS. And, in his Epistle to the Hebrews, he calls it [5] the Word Spoken of ANGELS.

LXI. It is likewife to be obferved, that, when [6] Moses and Aaron, and Nadab and Abiku, and feventy of the Elders of Ifrael, went up into the Mount, by the Command of God, it is faid, They faw the God of Ifrael; also they faw God, and did eat and drink: That is, they faw the God of Ifrael, and did live to eat and drink. Whereas, when Mofes afterwards applied to God, and begged it of him, as a Favour, that he might fee his Glory, or Face, that he might know him; [7] JeHOVAH faid unto him, Thou canst not fee my Face; for there fhall no Man fee me, and live. But, fays he to Mofes, I will make all my Goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the Name of JEHOVAH before thee: And it fall come to pass, while my Glory paffeth by, that I will put thee in a Clift of the Rock, and will cover thee with my Hand while I pass by: And I will take away mine Hand, and thou shalt fee what [8]
