TO THE READER.

Much time and labor have been expended in collecting the facts and information in this volume. The articles have been prepared with great care. The author has endeavored to introduce nothing as statistical information, but what has been received from authentic sources. As a book of reference, it is believed, that it will prove a valuable auxiliary in diffusing useful knowledge. It contains multum in purvo; and here the reader can have the world before him at a glance. Care, too, has been taken to introduce nothing that may tend to warp the political or religious principles of the reader ; for the design of this work is not to bias, but inform; not to serve the narrow views of party, but to increase the facilities for general knowledge. To those gentlemen, whose valuable contributions have greatly assisted the author in the preparation of the work, he would tender his frank acknowledge

ments.

New-London, July, 1842.
