of any road to either place exist. As to Whitby, recently claimed by a writer on Roman roads in the Nineteenth Century Review, I do not think it reasonable to suppose that a road starting from the borders of Scotland to York should turn tail and go north again for over fifty miles. To my mind, the nearest suitable point on the Yorkshire coast would be the objective of the iter, and that would be, with the greatest amount of probability, Bridlington Bay.

Whether Pretorium was situated on the Chalk cliff at Sewerby, or lower down on the Boulder Clay cliff of Bridlington Quay, must be a of pure conjecture. In the latter case it has long since disappeared with the waste of the clay; in the former it may be urged that a raised road runs from the old town of Bridlington to Sewerby, and that, there, the corner of a camp is still visible between Sewerby House and the Cliff Edge, though the rest has been swallowed up by the waves.

It follows that, if the opinions expressed above have any value, Delgovitia must have been situated near the intersection of the two Roman roads at Blealands Nook, between Fimber and Wetwang, where Mr. Mortimer discovered the Roman cemetery and waterworks, the distances given in the iter almost exactly corresponding with Stamford Bridge (Derventio, vii. m.p.m.), Blealands Nook (Delgovitia, xiii. m.p.m.), and Bridlington Bay (Pretorium xxv. m.p.m.).*

Sacrilege at bessle Church in 1527.

BOUT eleven o'clock at night, on the fourth day of November, 1527, one Alexander Hyensley, alias Alexander Pryngell, of Gilbertedyke (now Gilberdyke), in the County of York, weaver, broke into the church of All Saints at Hessle. His object was plunder, and he succeeded in carrying off a number of valuable objects. These, as enumerated in the indictment, consisted of one silver cross, parcel gilt, of the value of seventeen pounds, one pair of silver thuribles called sensours, of the value of twelve pounds, three silver chalices of the value of eight pounds, one silver ship* of the value of twenty shillings, two silver candelabra of the value of eight pounds, and one pix, entirely of gold, of the value of six pounds. The total estimated value, £52, was, of course, only a fraction of the worth of the things stolen in the currency of the present day.

The burglar seems to have been speedily caught. We have no account of his arrest or of the evidence

brought against him. All we know is that on the 30th January, 1528, he was brought before the mayor of Hull, Thomas Wilkinson, and nine of the aldermen, presiding over the court of Quarter Sessions, when a presentation against him, in precisely identical terms, was made by both the town and county juries. Hereupon he was sent back to prison, where he remained until the 16th June, 1528, when he was brought before

the mayor, aldermen, and deputy-recorder, sitting in a court of gaol-delivery. The prisoner pleaded not guilty. The jury, however, found him guilty, and the sentence passed upon him was that he was to be hanged by the neck. He would be hanged on the foreshore of the Humber, at the point long afterwards known as Gallows or Gallow Clough.

I transcribe below the passages in the old Hull Quarter Sessions Book (Henry VI. and Philip and Mary), from which I have learned the foregoing facts.
