PREFACE.

THE Notes of Churches contained in this volume, and referring to the County of Kent, form but a part of a series embracing the whole of England and Wales. This series, it must be premised, deals only with the old parish churches of the country dating anterior to the Restoration,--Sir Stephen Glynne having drawn his line at that point; but it is believed that, with this limitation, it is almost if not quite exhaustive of the more noteworthy fabrics.

The survey which it embodies, and which extends to upwards of 5,530 churches, was spread over the whole of Sir Stephen Glynne's life. The precise date of its commencement does not appear; but in his early youth the forms of churches seemed to fascinate his attention, and Ecclesiology soon became his chief pursuit. At any rate a considerable portion of the work was done prior to 1840, and this portion includes all those accounts to which no date is prefixed: the remainder was carried on year by year without intermission, so
