A NEW ROTARY PLANISPHERE,

For finding the Latitude of the Pole Star at any time, the Meridian Passage of the principal Fixed Stars, together with their Distances from the Meridian, in one view, without any computation. By the assistance of this Planisphere, the Mariner will be able to obtain his Latitude, when in the northern hemisphere, by an altitude of the Pole Star, at any time, in the most simple manner yet known, without the assistance of the Right Ascension of the Sun, as hitherto required. By it, also, the observer will be able to know what star is on or near the Meridian, at any given time, when preparing to take observations, without the assistance of Nautical Tables. The Navigator will also be able to see the Distance of the Fixed Stars from the Meridian, whether they be above or below the horizon at that time, which, if compared with those in sight, will convey a knowledge of them to the observer very clearly. The Student will be able to find the Right Ascension of the Sun, of those Stars given in the Planisphere, and the Right Ascension of the Meridian, to the nearest minute of time as obviously as the former, without the assistance of the Nautical Tables usually required 10s. 6d.

In this work the Publisher's aim has been to give, in as clear and succinct a manner as possible, instructions which should be useful as well to the Coaster as the Stranger. It may be remarked that the Charts of the Coasts of which the work treats, are entirely new, and the information embodied in them has principally furnished the means of its publication.

In the first part of the work are Directions for the East Coasts of England and Scotland, the Coasts of France, Holland, and Norway to the White Sea, the Cattegat, Baltic, and Gulf of Finland; and in the second part, Directions for the English Channel. Throughout, the description of the land, leading-marks, shoals, &c., precede the sailing directions, which, in addition to being more intelligible, will render the work more easy of reference. Observations upon the tides, the time of high water on the days of full and change, are generally noticed at the end of the respective sections, instead of being summed up in a table at the end of the work, as has usually been the case in publications of this character; and this has been done for the sake of uniformity, as, by referring to the account of any particular place, the tidal remarks, with sailing directions, will be seen at once, instead of looking for them in different parts of the book.

When approaching land, or running for a port, it frequently happens that pilots are not at hand, or are prevented by storms or a heavy sea from offering their services. In such cases, unless the master is well acquainted with the harbour, the safety of the vessel depends upon the accuracy of the Sailing Directions; for Charts are intended to give only a general idea of the coast, and cannot contain that information of which a Book of Directions is capable. The compilation of a work of this nature has been one of great labour, and felt to be of great responsibility; but the Publisher trusts that, inasmuch as recourse has been made to every available document, and no expense has been spared in procuring information, it will be found worthy of its comprehensive title.
