8 SUCCESSION OF BISHOPS IN THE AMERICAN CHURCH, U. S.

[merged small][merged small][ocr errors][merged small][merged small]

"Valiant may she be and holy,

Branch of England's mother-vine;
May each YEAR but make her, wholly,
Worthy spouse of CHRIST divine!
May her future sons delight
In the sainted name of WHITE,
May her HOBART's sacred name
Ever praise and homage claim,
And her Apostolic band,
E'en as these, united stand;
Then, O GOD! thy Church shall be
Valiant, strong and glorious ever,
Free from guile, from error free,

True to thee, and true for ever.
XVIII.

"Mortal! be thou meek and strong:

Suffer, live and act for GOD; Though the strife be hot and long,

He will break th' oppressor's rod. In the one true Church remain, Bring it joy, or bring it pain;

Shun the templer, though he come
Robed in brightest pomp of Rome-
Shun the tempter, though he smile
Soft through many an error-wile;
Thou art home, in God's own ark ;

Patiently continue there;

Though the sky be sometimes dark,
Soon shall breathe the morning air.

XIX.
"Christian! be a worthy son
Of thy blest Redeemer's spouse,
Supplicate for mercy won,

Bow thy soul in tearful vows;
Penitent, approach the cross,
Joy in earthly shame and loss,
Tread the vale thy Saviour trod,
Through affliction, go to God;
Or, if peaceful lot be thine,
All into his hands resign.
Then, though never more my light

On thine earthly way should gleam, Thou shalt know th' excess of bright' 'Mid the Heaven's noon-day beam."

Then fare thee well, Alcioné! thy light

'Mid the gray dawn that's breaking now on high,

Fades gradual with the dim retiring night, And the pale moon goes, wildering, down the sky;

Another year thou'rt heralding on earth,
Light of the Pleiades! New Year of
change,

And stern and bright vicissitude, whose birth
Is with us, but whose endless issues range
Through the vast boundless sea of being
spread,

As the eternal bourne of quick and dead.

SUCCESSION OF BISHOPS IN THE AMERICAN CHURCH, U S.

We have been favoured with the following very complete document, by a Correspondent, who has taken much pains in collecting the detailed particulars of all Episcopal Successions connected with our Church. We would recommend on this interesting inquiry Mr. Perceval's second edition of his work on Apostolical Succession. Many particulars, which were not ascertained at the time of that publication, have been since discovered; and, so far as the destruction of records will allow, we may hope that an evidence which will satisfy the most scrupulous will be collected, and secured from future loss. We have many extracts from such unprinted records, for which we shall endeavour to find room. But no one could with any reasonable consistency doubt the fact of regular succession of the Bishops of the Church, even if we had only one half as much evidence as we have. There would be a moral certainty, if not, as in fact we think there is, legal evidence.-The following list is authenticated from America.
