Names commencing with (1) De, Du, De La, and Des, and (2) Le and La, should be looked for both under the letters D and L respectively, and under the first letter of the remaining part of the name; while names correctly spelled without these particles should also be sought for with them prefixed. It should also be remembered that in old French manu. scripts, whether written by Frenchmen or others, the spelling of names is often phonetic, and frequently a mere approach to it
