aware that the shears had nothing to do with the armorial bearings of the Drapers' Company; but we are inclined to believe that they are used as the mark or insignia of the trade or manufacture in which the person who erected the building was engaged: and who was, probably, one of the society of Drapers.

The design and execution of this structure is so simply elegant, and so unlike the confused and clumsy architecture usual in Elizabeth's time, that we should be puzzled to fix the era of its erection, unless the roof might have been brought from some other place-perhaps from the chapel of Wolsey's college, or the priory of St. Peter, or old St. Peter's church-for it certainly surpasses, in elegance, any private edifice now remaining in Ipswich. It must have been built since the demolition of the convent; for it stands within the precincts of these friars' possessions, and was, probably, erected with the materials which formed the walls of part of that building: but we must leave the date of its erection, for the learned antiquarian to determine, satisfied with having attempted to bring its merits into notice. Some years since, it was in the possession of an old man, of this town, of the name of Bull: it now belongs to a person who is not able to afford to keep it in repair. We are sorry to see that, in consequence of this, the exterior roof is in such a dilapidated state, that the interior is liable to be injured by the weather. We, therefore, sincerely wish that some spirited lover of the arts would purchase the property, and rescue this really elegant structure from oblivion.

Nearly adjoining this building, at the corner of Lower Orwell-street, is a large house, of very ancient date, remaining, with its rude wooden front and open arched windows, without glass, in the same state as it must have been centuries ago; and is, probably, the oldest private
