THE PUBLICATIONS OF THE THORESBY SOCIETY. ESTABLISHED IN THE YEAR MDCCCLXXXIX. VOLUME X. FOR THE YEARS MDCCCXCVIII, MDCCCXCIX, MDCCCC. The Registers OF THE Parish Church of Leeds FROM 1667 TO 1695. Seventh and Eighth Books. EDITED BY GEORGE DENISON LUMB, One of the Hon. Secretaries of the Thoresby Society and of the LEEDS: 1901. PREFACE. Y6T5 v.10 T HE present Volume contains the entries in the seventh and eighth Books of the Leeds Parish Church Registers, extending from the year 1667 to the year 1695. The leaves of the seventh Book measure 148 × 9 inches, and of the eighth Book 14 × 11 inches; the leaves of both books are of parchment. Edward Smith was the Parish Clerk, and wrote the entries down to his death, in December, 1669. He was succeeded by his son, John Smith, who continued in office until his death, in January, 1685. William Kent succeeded, and was Clerk until his death, in July, 1694, when Francis Lupton was appointed. Many of the entries are much faded, and many have been carelessly written, and crowded between other entries. The month and year have again been placed in the margin. The Baptismal entries have been rearranged, and the Marriages have been shortened, as shown on pp. 1, 81, 196, and 270. It may be of interest and assistance to mention that 28 volumes of MS. pedigrees relating to Leeds and district, compiled by the late Wm. Sykes, of Leeds, solicitor, and presented by the late Dr. John Sykes, of Doncaster, an old friend of the editor, are in the Reference Department of the Leeds Public Library. And also that 4 volumes of MS. pedigrees relating to Yorkshire, and compiled by Thomas Wilson, F.S.A., Parish Clerk of Leeds 373 |
