THE little book, a new edition of which is now in the reader's hand, was originally drawn up by the compiler for the use of those members of his flock who desired to join in such parts of the Morning and Evening Prayer as are chanted in their parish church, and on whose account it was essential that whatever instruction was given on the subject, should be presented in as simple and concise a form as possible. At that time the defective state of our village choirs had attracted less notice than has been the case since, and there was greater difficulty in obtaining the aid of persons who were competent to the task of restoring a practice which had been long laid aside in country-places.
