THE present GUIDE TO THE LANCASTER AND CARLISLE, THE CALEDONIAN, AND THE EDINBURGH AND GLASGOW RAILWAYS, forms a companion volume to the GUIDE TO THE NORTH-WESTERN RAILWAY. We have travelled with the reader through a vast extent of country, abounding in antiquarian and historical remains, and diversified, in many places, with natural scenery which could not be surpassed in beauty by any other land; and we have endeavoured, as faithful chroniclers of bygone events, and as admirers of the picturesque, to draw the reader's attention to whatever could arrest his steps on the way. We trust that our efforts to amuse and instruct have been successful. It would be impossible in such brief limits as this little Hand-book to do strict justice to any descriptions we have attempted, or to be perfectly accurate in all our statements; but we have endeavoured, by consulting conscientious authorities, to adhere to truth. Where any deficiencies in this respect exist, we shall not fail to correct them in a future edition. The grateful thanks of the Author are due to the several authorities officially connected with the Railways described in this volume, for much valuable assistance. Concerning our commercial notices, the remarks in the Preface of our companion volume will apply to this work. Our obligations are particularly due to the admirable Gazetteer of the World of Messrs. A. Fullarton and Co., of Edinburgh and London; to the ably-written Land we Live in, and to the intelligent and amusing "Hand-books for Scotland," of Messrs. Thomas Murray and Son, of Glasgow. In our next edition we shall include a DESCRIPTIVE TOUR IN THE HIGHLANDS, and a VISIT TO THE LAND OF BURNS. Any communications relative to the improvement of this GUIDE will be gratefully received and thankfully acknowledged by MR. GEORGE MEASOM, the author and proprietor. 74, CHARRINGTON-STREET, OAKLEY-SQUARE, LONDON, N.W. June, 1859. |
