PATENT INVENTIONS.

No. 1. VOL. XXXVI. ENLARGED SERIES.-JULY 2, 1860.

Specification of the Patent granted to WILLIAM KIRKBY PEACE, of the firm of W. K. and C. Peace, of Eagle Works, Sheffield, in the County of York, Manufacturer, for An Improvement in Canisters for Hermetically Sealing Paints and other Substances.-Dated August 3, 1859.(A communication.)

WITH AN ENGRAVING.

To all to whom these presents shall come, &c., &c.— The invention consists in constructing tinned or galvanized iron or other cans or vessels of any required form with a ring or rim of thin soft metal attached to the top edge of the same. The objection to the soldered tin cases and hermetically sealed vessels at present in use is the difficulty of opening them or removing the lid without much labour, and the necessity of employing proper instruments for the purpose. Such vessels it is proposed in accordance with this invention to construct so that they may be opened with facility by using a penknife or other suitable sharp instrument.

Fig. "1," represents an elevational section of a vessel made according to this invention with the top sealed.
