Receyvyd of John ap Pryce of the newtown esqr for the haulfe yeres rent of Abermule p'sell of the late desolvyd monastry of stratflor. dew to the queens m'tie at this present.

1 Matthew Pryce, otherwise Matthew Goch, was a grandson of Rhys ab David Lloyd (the founder of the Pryce family of Newtown Hall), who was killed at the battle of Banbury. He was Sheriff in 1548.-Mont. Worthies.

2 The grange of Abermule formed part of the possessions of the lately-dissolved monastery of Strata Florida, of which a lease for twenty-one years from Sept. 29th, 1546, was granted by the King, Edward VI, on March 20th, 1547, to Richard Devereux, who had been Receiver-General of the Abbey estates since its suppression. In Brut y Tywysogion we have an account of some severe fighting between the Welsh and English at Abermule in 1263, when the monk's barn was burned. Williams's Hist. of Strata Florida, pp. 143, 180, and Appx., p. ci.

3 The Stedmans resided at Strata Florida for many generations, and for a long period owned a large portion of the Abbey estates in that neighbourhood. They now belong to the Powells of Nanteos. See pedigree in Lewys Dwnn's Visitations, vol. i, pp. 19, 88. John Stedman's son and heir, James Stedman, married Catherine, daughter of Sir Richard Pryce, of Gogerddan, who after his death became the wife of John Pryce, Esq., of Newtown, created a baronet in 1628.

4 John ap Pryce, or John Pryce, was the eldest son of the abovenamed Matthew Pryce, and was Sheriff in 1566 and 1586. He also sat in Parliament for the Borough of Montgomery in 1558-9, 1562-3, and 1567-8, and for the county in 1572 and 1581. Mont. Worthies. He died in 1602. See a Summary of his Will in Mont. Coll., xxi, P. 195.

The above receipts and those which follow give us some idea of the difficulties attending the transmission of money in the sixteenth century.

This was probably Edward Pryce, the eldest son of the abovenamed John Pryce, by his marriage with Elizabeth, daughter of Rees ap Morris ap Owen, of Aberbechan. He was Deputy-Sheriff to his father in 1586, bailiff of Newtown in 1594, and Sheriff in 1615. Mont. Worthies. He married first, Juliana, daughter of John Owen Vaughan of Llwydiarth, by whom he had issue a son, John (the first baronet) and a daughter Jane; secondly, one Elizabeth. who survived him. He died in 1627.

2 Lewis Blayney of Gregynog was son-in-law of John Pryce, having married his daughter Bridget at Montgomery, July 7th, 1577. He was Deputy-Sheriff for that year to his father, David Lloyd Blayney. He died in 1600.

There was a family of this name then resident at Welshpoo!, Howell Porter was one of the Bailiffs of Pool in 1567-8, 1577, and 1581-Mont. Coll. xii., p. 515; and Steward of Overgorther and Teirtref 35 Eliz. (1593). Edward Porter, of Tirymynech, is named in the Guilsfield Register, Mont, Call: vi, p. 282.

The origin of the annuity above referred to is fully explained by the letter which follows, wherein Ezekiel Weston describes himself as a "kinsman" of Edward Price by marriage, it would seem. Testator by his will, referred to vol. xxi, p. 195, acknowledged that he owed "Maister Weston ten poundes."
