PREFATORY ADDRESS.

ITH the close of a Third Year we resume our task of thankfully presenting another Volume of "the Oxford Magazine" to its friends. As has been our wont, we look back upon our earlier endeavours, when we contended hard for a standing place amongst the periodical literature of the age; and while tracing our progress thence to the present time, we venture to hope that our endeavours have not been used in vain; that there has been something beyond the mere venture of a commercial enterprise in the establishment and carrying on of our project; something beyond, not only in the motive which actuated its founders, but much also amongst those who have helped it so far forward, who have hailed its monthly issue both as a source of interest to themselves, and as helping to support one of the few Church-teaching Periodicals in contra-distinction to their numberless successful competitors-weapons, may be, in doing battle for non-conformity, dissent, or immorality.

The consistent English Churchman has much to be thankful for. He cannot look around him without observing evident marks of recent growth in genuine Church principle, and this especially among the masses
