The Vicar, the Rev. H. J. Peck, has been most kind in giving the transcriber every facility in his power to perfect his work, and for this he begs, both on his own account and in the name of the Society, to offer him sincere thanks. There is another person to whom the Society is greatly indebted, the late Bishop of Oxford. So much interested was he in this Parish, that only a few months before his death he gave a very handsome donation towards the printing of this volume, and though the transcript of each volume of the Registers was forwarded for his inspection, when finished, it was to the great regret of the transcriber that this great and good man should have passed away before the whole was completed. His works are too well known to require any allusion to them here, but of him, in private life, it may be said that it was a privilege to be honoured with its friendship, or even his acquaintanceship. There was a charm in his manner, and with it a modesty, that none could fail in recognising; to know him was to love him, and to loose him was to feel that one had been taken away from amongst his friends.
