LOCATION AND AREA. The Mine la Motte sheet (plate i) is called after the oldest mining camp in the area. The latitude of the south line of the district is 37° 30'; and of the north 37° 45'; the lines of longitude west of Greenwich are 90° 15' and 90° 30'. The sheet lies in the southeastern quarter of the state. Its southern limit is about seventy miles north of the Arkansas line and its eastern edge extends within twenty miles of the Mississippi river. It includes portions of the three counties, Ste. Genevieve, Madison and St. Francois. The position with reference to the counties. is shown in the accompanying diagram (figure 1): FIGURE 1. Position of the Mine la Motte Sheet. The areal extent is 235 square miles, of which approximately three-fifths lie in Madison county and two-fifths in St. Francois. Only about two and one-half square miles are contained in Ste.
