ARCHEOLOGICAL FINDS IN LANCASHIRE.

The following finds appear to be unrecorded in any permanent form. They are mentioned here in order that a reference to this volume may be given in the forthcoming Archeological Survey of Lancashire:

AINSWORTH. Bronze axe or standard-head, in the possession of Mr. Thomas Woodhouse, Tyldesley.

ANGLEZARK. Standing Stones," circle on Standing Stones Hill. The stones have been removed or destroyed. Information of Major

French. BARTON-ON-IRWELL. Hollowed log (? coffin), now in the Manchester

Museum, Owens College, found in July, 1889, in the Trafford Hall cutting of the Manchester Ship Canal, about six or seven hundred yards east of Barton Bridge. Information of Mr. E. Ward, F.R.M.S. BLEASDALE, near Garstang. Neolithic spear head, found on the north side of the River Brock, near Brook Farm. Exhibited by Mr. S. Jackson at the meeting of the Society on the 1st April, 1892. BOLTON. Pre-Roman flint-polisher, now in the possession of Mr. James Finney, Bolton.

BRIERCLIFFE-CUM-Extwistle, near Burnley. (In addition to the finds recorded in Memories of Hurstwood.)

(1) Pre-Roman earth circle, near Twist Castle, partly explored, and a food vessel found intact A.D. 1889.

(2) Pre-Roman ring mound (stone circle), at Hellclough Head, near the two others there, recorded in Memories of Hurstwood; found to contain urn completely disintegrated, a

large quantity of human bones, and a flint battle-axe.

(3) Pre-Roman earth circle, at Thursden.

(4) Pre-Roman earth circle, at Pike Low.

BROUGHTON, near Manchester. Small flint neolithic scraper, found in a bed of river gravel, about eight feet deep, in Irwell House grounds, just beyond Peel Park Suspension Bridge, in 1880. (Now in the Salford Museum, Peel Park.)

CARTMEL PARISH (Grange over Sands). Neolithic implement. Information of Mr. H. Swainson Cowper, F.S.A.

CARTMEL PARISH (New burial ground). Pre-Roman urn and bone ashes. Information of Mr. H. Swainson Cowper, F.S.A.

CATLOW (in Marsden). Roman coins of the latter Empire, found in a vessel in 1866. Information of Mr. Tattersall Wilkinson. CHORLTON-CUM-HARDY.

Stone Celt found in Back Lane. Information of Mr. Clayton Chorlton, of Didsbury.

COLTON (near), Bethecar Moor. Scorice (Bloomery). Information of Mr. H. Swainson Cowper, F.S.A.

CROSBY FLATS (Sefton Parish). Remains not yet investigated. Information of Mr. E. W. Cox, Bebbington.

DIDSBURY. Brass coin of Antoninus Pius, found near Millgate Lane, not far from the ford, by Mr. Clayton Chorlton, in whose possession it still remains.

FURNESS (exact locality unknown). Bronze armlet and bronze Celt. Information of Mr. H. Swainson Cowper, F.S.A.

HAWKSHEAD PARISH (Borwick Ground). Neolithic implement. Information of Mr. H. Swainson Cowper, F.S.A.

IRLAM. Pre-Roman perforated hammer-stone, found in excavating the Manchester Ship Canal and placed in the Warrington Museum, 1890. Information of Dr. Sherratt of Warrington, per Mr. Madeley, curator. IRLAM. Bronze socketed spear-head, six inches long, blade one and a quarter inch in the widest part, found in excavating the Manchester Ship Canal, at a depth of from twenty to thirty feet. Sketched in the Manchester Weekly Times of July 17, 1891.

IRLAM. Canoe (now at Peel Park), found in a cutting of the Manchester Ship Canal, at a depth of twenty-five feet, in June, 1890.

KENYON. Pre-Roman bronze tongue of fibula, and fragment of urn, found together in 1826 on Mr. Walpole's farm, and now in Warrington Museum. Information originally of Mr. Walpole, confirmed by Mr. Beamont, now communicated by Mr. Madeley, curator.

LIVERPOOL. Anglo-Saxon coins reported to have been found on site of Exchange Station. Information of Mr. E. W. Cox, obtained from Mr. W. E. Gregson.
