July 8. The R.A. of star (b) has been assumed to be 10m 2985 less than that of Groombridge 1396. It is too faint to be observed with the transit-circle.

JULY 8.

Remarks by Mr. Main.

The nucleus, as observed with the Heliometer, has a circular planetary disc of considerable brightness (but with the 10-ft. telescope it appeared to me to be stellar), and above it in the field the envelope forms a sector of about 120°, this part being distinctly brighter than the parts of the coma radiating below it on each side: the diameter of the nucleus is probably about 10", and that of the envelope above it from 30" to 40"; the coma streams downward in the field in a strictly parabolic shape, leaving a dark interval in the centre-a star of about the 9'0 magnitude is seen in the right branch of it without diminution of light; the axis of the comet downwards makes an angle of about 12° with the declination-wire towards the apparent right of the field; the nucleus has the appearance of matter flowing out from it towards the envelope upwards, but is certainly not so well-defined on that side as on the other.

Almost surrounding the nucleus I noticed a circular band of nebulous matter of great brilliancy, having a well-defined limit, the space which was free from it being below the nucleus in the field, and forming an angle of about 15° with the two streamers; it resembled a miniature lunar corona not quite perfect. Both the streamers had, on two previous nights, an apparent inclination towards the right of the field in a curved direction, this I did not observe to-night; the left streamer was at first of less brightness than the other, but is now quite equal to it, and perhaps surpasses it.
