BATH AND WELLS DIOCESAN BOARD OF EDUCATION.

GRANTS for TRAINING PUPILS within the DIOCESE.

THE Board offer a certain number of Grants, for the purpose of training promising pupils at schools within the Diocese.

RULES.

1. THE Grants shall be made for training pupils in any schools within the diocese, certified by the Diocesan Inspector as suitable for that purpose.

2. Grants shall be tenable for three years, and the candidates shall not be less than 15 years of age. 3. The amount of grant shall not exceed 15 l. a year for males, and 121. for females; of which 37. shall be paid, in each case, for instruction.

4. Candidates shall be elected by the Diocesan Board, on the report of the Diocesan Inspector, assisted by two District Inspectors to be named by him, after an examination held in such place as the Diocesan Inspector shall elect.

5. In every case the exhibitions shall be paid half-yearly, on the production of a certificate of having received proper instruction from the master, and of regular attendance and good conduct to be sent by the clergyman or school manager through the District Inspector.

THE Diocesan Inspector will act on the following general principles in giving Certificates that schools are suitable to receive the Training Pupils.

1. THE master or mistress must hold the Bishop's certificate of merit.

2. The District Inspector's report of the school, to the Bishop, for the last two years, must have been a favourable one as to instruction, discipline, and the general apparatus of the school room.

3. In the case of female training pupils there must always be a mistress, and not merely a female to teach needle-work in the afternoon; and if there be a master in the school, or in the adjoining boys' school, he must be a married man.

4. The parochial clergyman must certify that there are respectable persons with whom the training pupil can lodge, and that the rooms intended for them are airy and comfortable.

5. The school, if a mixed one, must have at least 50 children in attendance on an average. If a boys' or girls' school only, not less than 40.

hath declared to us his intention of offering himself a candidate for a certificate of merit as a parochial schoolmaster, and for that end hath requested of us letters testimonial of his aptness to teach, and good behaviour: -We, therefore, whose names are hereunto subscribed, do testify that the said

having been personally known to us for the space of three years last past, hath during that time. lived piously, soberly, and honestly, nor hath he at any time, as far as we know or have heard, maintained or written anything contrary to the doctrine or discipline of the Church of England. And moreover we think him worthy of the office of parochial schoolmaster.

EXAMINATION PAPERS for Bishop's Certificate for School Teachers.

MORNING PAPER.

Scripture.

1. Give the meaning of the following words:Bible, Testament, Inspiration, Exodus, Deuteronomy, Pentateuch, Apocrypha, Gospel, Epistle. 2. Write a short history of one of these persons:-Moses, Solomon, Ahab.

3. Relate the circumstances which led to the revolt of the Ten Tribes. What was the date of that event?

4. Mention the different occasions on which our Blessed Lord raised the dead to life, and at what place each of such miracles was wrought.

5. Relate from the Book of the Acts of the Apostles, the events of the Day of Pentecost.

6. Quote passages from Holy Scripture which reprove the sins of pride; an unforgiving spirit; love of money; love of dress.

7. Write out as accurately as you can any one of the parables of our Blessed Lord, and explain briefly its practical teaching.

The Prayer Book.

1. Was our Prayer Book first composed by the Reformers; state the important object of it, and why called "The Book of Common Prayer?"

2. Was there substantial uniformity in the "Oriental," "Alexandrian," "Roman," and "Gallican" Liturgies? Liturgies? From which was the Ancient British Liturgy derived?

3. State" the order" for reading the Scriptures in the Christian Church-how derived? And from what edition of the Bible were the Psalms,

Epistles, and Gospels, in King Edward's Liturgy,

taken?

4. Was the Lord's Prayer repeated by the people in the Primitive Church, as the Rubric directs now? Mention a Saxon chief in the 11th century who was executed while repeating the Lord's Prayer.

5. Give the names of the creeds; the meaning of the word; and when composed. Mention a custom formerly adopted in Poland. When repeated?

6. The Collects. Why so called. And at what period were those collects for saints' days (which expressed reliance upon the merits of the saint commemorated) altered to their present form?

7. State the practice of the Church of Rome in the celebration of the Holy Eucharist.

English History.

1. Give a genealogical table of the English Kings from William I. to Henry II., adding the date of the accession of each. Why is it said that the Saxon line was restored in the person of Henry II. ?

2. Mention the most important events in the reign of Henry II.

3. What was the origin of the war with France in the reign of Edward III.? Give a summary of the English wars in France, from the reign of

Edward III. to the expulsion of the English from that country.

4. Give a brief account of the disputes between Charles I. and his first three Parliaments.

5. Determine as nearly as you can the dates of the following events, and give the names of the persons principally connected with them:-1st. The Battle of Flodden Field; 2d. Execution of Mary Queen of Scots; 3d. Destruction of the Spanish Armada; 4th. Siege of La Rochelle (in the reign of James I.); 5th. Execution of Archbishop Laud; 6th. Fire of London; 7th. Death of Hampden.

6. Where are the following places? And what renders them remarkable?-Hexham, St. Albans, Dunbar, Rouen, Bannockburn, Drogheda, Colchester, Malplaquet, Naseby, Dunkirk.

7. Give an account of the Rye House Plot.

8. Give particulars respecting (a) the Magna Charta, and (b) the Petition of Rights; and mention the circumstances under which they were severally enacted.

9. What is the date, and what are the chief points of the Bill of Rights.

10. Give the date and mention the provisions of the Habeas Corpus Act. What other Constitutional Acts were passed in the reign of Charles II.?

1. Mention the counties on the eastern coast of Great Britain and their chief towns.

3. Draw a map of Italy or Greece.

3. Explain in a simple manner the causes of the tides and of lunar eclipses.

2. Describe the difference, if any, between an adverb and an adjective; an adjective and a noun; a verb and a participle.

3. Mention the different kinds of pronouns, and write a sentence containing each kind.

4. Write down the three degrees of comparison of the following adjectives:-Little, most, magnificent, good, bad.

5. What is the rule for forming the plural of nouns? Mention some of the most common exceptions to this rule.

Common Things.

1. Does the introduction of machinery injure the workman.

2. Show that it is not always economical to buy cheap articles.

3. Mention the chief points for inquiry on entering a friendly society or club for providing pay in sickness, &c.

4. What is the best method for warming schoolrooms? Give your reasons for your opinion.

5. How would you restore auimation to a person apparently lifeless from drowning?

Music.

1. What is the position of the semitones in the major scale, and what in the minor? Write the ascending and descending scales in any two major and two minor scales.

2. Write in the key of F the treble part of any single chant that you know, and transpose it into the key of G.

3. Which note should rise and which should fall in resolving the dominant seventh.

4. Explain the difference of common and triple time.
