INDEX

TO THE

FIRST TWENTY VOLUMES

OF THE

EAST RIDING ANTIQUARIAN JOURNAL.
By J. CHARLES Cox, LL.D., F.S.A.

In this index, the plan adopted in the index to the first twenty-
five volumes of the "Journal of the Derbyshire Archæological
Society," at my suggestion, has been followed. The main principles
of this index, which are supposed to be the easiest and most helpful
plan for practical use, are as follows. In the first place, it is a
simple one, and not broken up into different sub-headings. The
index therefore includes place names, as well as those that are
personal. It will also be noticed that it a'so includes particular
subjects, such as trades, or details of churches, such as effigies,
and these subjects are printed in italics, in the hope that they
will serve for easier reference. The black type also denotes the

volume.

This index makes no claim whatever to be complete or exhaus-
If it had been, not only the trouble and expenditure of time
in its compilation would have been materially increased, but also
the cost of its printing, and this last consideration is a serious
one. It is hoped, however, that it will be found that nothing
of moment has been omitted.

As one of the founders of this Society, and its first President,
it has been a distinct pleasure to go through those pages in detail,
but the sad reflection has been pressed upon me that not a few of
its original and most able members have been already called away.
